In 2015, UPS started trialling a new concept for sustainable package delivery in the city centre: micro hubs. Introducing Micro Hubs – the Hamburg Model It was time for a different approach to last mile delivery – one that made it possible to deliver large volumes with environmentally friendly vehicles and at the same time solved the parking issue. And this process of finding available parking in dense urban areas is extremely time consuming and therefore expensive for a delivery company too. Whether fully electric or with internal combustion engine, both types of vehicles need to be parked somewhere. Not only did they purchase the first electric vans, but they also found a German company to convert already existing trucks with internal combustion engines into fully electric vehicles. Since 2007, UPS has also been pushing electric vehicles for their deliveries. However, back in 2005, these bikes were used solely for deliveries in pedestrian zones and due to their limited number, the real impact remained negligible. The early introduction of cargo bikes is such an effort. That being said, shifting to sustainable delivery processes certainly pays off in more than just one way.Īccording to Rainer Kiehl, Project Manager for City Logistics at UPS Hamburg, Germany, numerous efforts have been made throughout the last years to make delivery on the last mile more sustainable by increasing the share of zero-emission vehicles. While the last mile is by far the most expensive part of the delivery process (depending on the study, it amounts to 40 or even 50 % of all transportation related costs), it is also the part of the process that is most visible to the end customer and therefore vital for businesses. In an interview, Rainer Kiehl shed some light on how UPS Hamburg delivers goods via these urban hubs. The solutions are there – and micro hubs are certainly one of them. We have run enough trials – now is the time to act.” Rainer Kiehl, Project Manager for City Logistics at UPS Hamburg, is convinced that with today’s knowledge, every package delivery company would theoretically be able to introduce zero-emission logistics right away. “We don’t need another empirical study on micro hubs.

The cameras have configurable resolutions and frame rates. I've configured it to record everything for 40 days. With a paintbrush tool you define what areas of the image you want to trigger motion. I tried several NVR applications and have settled on Xeoma (for now). My DIY NVR is a repurposed i5-2500k system, Ubuntu, zfs on 16 disks. Used the NVR for a couple weeks and found it next to useless. I found good pricing on multiple cameras by buying a Costco package. Roughly half the bandwidth, storage and CPU, but 16x as many cameras. Think of it this way: say you have only one camera, but it supports 4k resolution at 60fps (like big-budget movie studio quality). For now, I have a little script that creates actual h.264/mkv videos from the JPGs (using ffmpeg) and that radically improves the space efficiency. Last I read, they were working on a new version that deals in video natively, which should improve performance considerably. So it tends to be CPU and I/O heavy (since it was written back in the day when MPEG was the norm). That's one limitation of ZM, it stores "videos" as a sequence of JPG images. I use the main stream for motion detection (and capture only when my criteria is met), and the sub-stream for continuous recording (as a backup). My cameras actually support two streams: a high-resolution main stream, and a low-resolution sub-stream. Oh, also: in practice, you generally don't do continuous recording, but rather activate some kind of motion detection trigger. Intuitively, if there's a lot of redundancy in an image, it will compress better, but if it's highly variable, then it will not compress that well. But the specs I showed above don't tell the whole story, as how much compression you get from JPG conversion is highly dependent on the scene itself. To give you some real numbers, I looked at a few events for this camera: So in practice, you generally get much better numbers than my theoretical worst-case numbers presented here. What?! OK, in actuality, Zoneminder is saving JPG files, which are compressed images. So every second of video from this camera requres 4x1280x720x12 = about 42 MB, which would also equate to a storage system than can support 42 MB/s write speed. So, to use one of my cameras as an example: I have mine set lower than what my cameras actually support, because it's good enough for me.įrame rate is how many frames (pictures) are taken per time interval, usually expressed in seconds, i.e. This is mostly a function of what your camera supports. Resolution is the number of pixels per frame. Divide this by 8 to get the bytes per pixel (i.e. 32bpp, 24bpp, and 16bpp are common values. Bit-depth is what it sounds like: the number of bits per pixel. It comes down to resolution, bit-depth and frame rate. To plan how much storage and IO you need, you really have to do the math, and it's not that precise. And in fact, that's a recent upgrade, it used to be just a single 5400 spinning drive. Click to expand. For my setup, I just have a pair of 7200 rpm drives in software raid-1. Install: Android, iOS, Windows PC, macOS, Linux, Web (Free) 7. E2E Encryption not turned on by default. No data handover to intelligence agencies.Apart from that, if a messaging service is funded by non-profit organizations, makes both server and client-side code open-source, and offers metadata encryption then it makes the service more trustworthy. One of the great examples is Signal which operates in the US, but regularly defends user privacy and even takes the government to court. Next, a secure messaging service should not bow down to government pressure and it should have a history of standing up for user rights. It has some of the best privacy laws that protect user data from third-party companies and government interference. Secondly, the service provider should be located in regions where the government is less hostile against user privacy.įor example, the EU is the best place to operate a company that deals with user data. And the best part is that not even the service provider can access your chats. E2E messages can be read only by the sender and the receiver. To make a messaging app really secure, the first and foremost criterion is to have End-to-End encryption (E2E). But before that let’s find out what makes a messaging app secure. Thankfully, we have found some great secure messaging apps for you. These are surely good enough reasons to suggest that we indeed need secure messaging apps that give our privacy priority. Finance, Banking, and Insurance industries too need secure messaging apps because the information they share is very confidential indeed and they need to be sure about sending such sensitive information on an app. Health care is another industry where secure messaging apps are a must to protect patient information from leaking out to everyone. Legal & Advisory firms need the best in class secure messaging apps because they wouldn’t want their client’s sensitive info to leak out. Moreover, reading our private conversations is certainly an invasion of our privacy.Īlong with our personal privacy invasion, there are various industries where secure messaging apps are a must. This suggests that while these apps are great, the companies might be using our conversations as information to target advertising in a better way. In a test conducted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, most of the popular messaging apps (BBM, Facebook Messenger, Hangout, Kik Messenger, Skype, Snapchat, Viber, and Yahoo Messenger) we use, failed to tick most security standards. There are a number of reasons why we need secure messaging apps. Apart from that, if you want to learn what is the need for a private messaging app and what makes a messaging service really secure then go through our explainers below. You can also move to the corresponding app by clicking on the link. Here, we have enlisted all the secret chat apps so that you can take a quick look at all the listings. If this show wasn't light-years ahead of THE SIMPSONS already, it surely was with this incredible saga. I cannot imagine how many weeks or months went into piecing this mini-epic together. The plot has FAMILY GUY patriarch Peter Griffin (voiced by show creator Seth McFarlane) telling his family a variation on the original Star Wars story with himself as Han Solo and everyone he knows standing in for the other characters.
